Big Golf warms to LIV

Here’s what we’ve got for you today:

• Big Golf media seems to like LIV now. Coincidence?

• Remember Greg Norman? He’s still around.

• Collin Morikawa makes a comeback win in Japan.

Coincidence? I think not…

Remember several months ago when a rather large segment of the established golf media would pretty much portrayed LIV Golf as evil incarnate?

Remember how those same media outlets would also more or less state with absolute confidence that every player who moved to LIV was nothing more than a money-grubbing traitor?

What about the time they berated the league for poor ratings? Or published long op-eds about LIV’s ultimate, inevitable demise?

Have you noticed it’s all (for the most part) stopped?

Not only has the negative coverage stopped, but it’s now positive and has increased in visibility.

Take for instance, this morning’s Golfweek homepage. Above the fold, there are five stories. Three of them are about LIV, and none of them are negative.

That leads us to ask the question.

What does this mean?

Does it mean that they’ve completely changed their minds about LIV?

Or is it because it doesn’t make sense to be attacking the same corporation you’re now covering since the LIV and PGA Tour merger will probably happen?

One thing is certain, Big Golf seems to be warming up to Golf but Louder. In fact, here’s a couple of tweets (or X posts) from Golf Monthly polling their audience about it — just this morning 👀

That’s the conspiracy theorist in us all, right?

Honestly, part of the reason is that the 2023 PGA season ended weeks ago, and LIV lasted a little longer — concluding yesterday in fact.

The Crushers took home something like a bazillion dollars (it was $14 million), for winning the team championship.

Since there hasn’t been any official update from either the PGA Tour or PIF, we can only speculate.

But what is true is that the media’s narrative on LIV being evil has pretty much made a 180.

Greg Norman is still at the helm of LIV?!?!

Remember Greg?

He’s the CEO of LIV Golf.

The guy Tiger Woods said that if he was still around, there would be no way that LIV and PGA Tour would ever have a future together.

He’s also the guy who was supposedly getting sacked the moment the ink dried when LIV and the PIF signed the deal. Because there was simply no way that he and the PGA Tour’s commissioner, Jay Monahan, would ever get along.

Guess what? He’s still around.

He was last spotted at the LIV Golf event in Miami. And he seemed to be pretty much in charge of everything at LIV.

Not only that, but there are reports that several more top-level players are making the move to LIV in the next few seasons.

There are reports that several of LIV team’s are getting DMs from some very serious investors.

Once again, we ask, what does this mean?

Will LIV’s future be as bleak as what was rumored when the PGA Tour/PIF deal was leaked? Or perhaps, is it an indicator that LIV is about to take off? 

Morikawa gets the win at the Zozo Championship

No one really sleeps on Collin Morikawa’s skill and talent.

After all, he’s currently ranked number 20 and he’s wowed us with amazing golf throughout his career. 

But it’s been a long time since we’ve last seen him get a win at a PGA Tour event.

To be precise, Morikawa hasn’t won an event since July 2021.

His dry spell has finally come to an end at this past week’s Zozo Championship in Japan where he took the win with a commanding seven-under 63.

“It feels so good. I can’t even explain it,” commented Morikawa in the press interview.

It’s been a tough season for Morikawa, but this is a great way to close it.

Can’t wait to see what the 2024 season has in store for Colin.
