JT was so close to the Fedex Cup Playoffs!

GM. This is Easy Pars. The golf newsletter that would pick you up off the ground after you narrowly missed a 34-yard chip in.

Here’s what we’ve got for you today:

  • PGA 2024: Changes are coming

  • Jon Rahm extended an olive branch different kind of limb

  • JT’s Fedex Playoff streak is broken 😒

The PGA Tour’s 2024 schedule has been leaked

As we’re reaching the end of the 2023 season, there’s one thing we have to recognize.

That is the sheer number of leaks the PGA tour has had this year.

At this point they might as well not even bother with an “official” schedule release.

But we digress.

The big question: What has changed now that the PIF and PGA Tour are working together?

Not so much as we had speculated, but there definitely are some changes.

(Side note: Anyone else notice that the Genesis Invitational, essentially put on by Tiger, who hates the idea of no-cut events, is one of four no-cut events 👀)

For one, the 2024 season will follow the calendar year, which it hasn’t done in close to ten years. Also, there will be more no-cut events and a lot more tournaments will have significantly smaller fields.

Here are some of the highlights from the leaked 2024 schedule:

  • Designated events will likely not be mandatory for top players anymore.

  • The Memorial Tournament, which used to be 2 weeks ahead of the US Open, was moved to be one week before the major.

  • The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the RBC Heritage, the Wells Fargo Championship, and the Travelers Championship will be no-cut events.

  • The regular season will end on September 1st with the Tour Championship.

From what we can see, and assuming the PIF/Tour deal goes through, the big changes will probably come in 2025. This is understandable since such a gigantic deal will have to go through a lot of red tape before it's finalized.

Jon Rahm is probably not being literal

The number 3 ranked golfer in a recent radio interview mentioned that the only LIV golfer he would consider for the European Ryder Cup team is Sergio Garcia.

He went so far as to say that, with all due respect to everyone else, he would still choose him even with a missing leg.

I highly doubt Sergio would be of much help with just one leg.

But even if Sergio was to play with both his legs, which he still has in functioning order, the argument could be made that he still wouldn’t be much help for team Europe.

That’s because this season hasn’t been all that great for Sergio Garcia.

Still, Rahm is upset by the fact that Serg won’t be on the team.

He’s done only okay at LIV events, and the Majors haven’t seen him shine.

And since one of the criteria to make the team is recent performances, this would surely play against him.

The whole point is moot since the main requirement is to have an active DP World Tour membership, which Garcia doesn’t have since he decided to cash in his big LIV check.

JT comes this close to Fedex Cup Playoffs

Picture this: Justin Thomas, standing on the 18th tee at Sedgefield Country Club, knowing that a birdie at the Wyndham Championship would bump him into the FedEx Cup's Top 70.

He pulls his tee shot left…

Salvages a second shot that lands tantalizingly close to the green.

Now, Thomas is facing a 34-yard chip, a shot that he needs to drop. And oh boy, did it come close!

His perfectly struck chip lands smoothly, bounces a few times, smooches the flagstick... and bounces away. Thomas hits the deck, lying flat in disbelief.

“It would have been incredible if it would have gone in,” says a still hopeful Thomas. Despite this near-miss, he finds himself 71st in the FedEx Cup standings—missing the cut for the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

But this isn't his first rodeo.

Reminiscing about his rookie year, Thomas says, “I was told that I’m in the TOUR Championship; it’s all good... Then, someone birdies his last three, someone makes a 30-footer, and suddenly I’m the first man out. But at the same time that happens, the other way can happen too.”
