šŸ‘€ Is the PGA now a LIV qualifying tour??

+Anthony Kim's first tourney

GM. This is Easy Pars. The golf newsletter that loves a good 5-putt.

Hereā€™s what weā€™ve got for you today:

  • Another tourney gets pushed due to weather

  • Anthony Kim is back-ish

  • The 5-putt we really hate to show you

The Cognizant play was suspended and will finish this morning

In reality, this story sets up the next. Youā€™ll see what we mean in a minute.

Yesterday, the Cognizant finale was delayed (until this Monday morning).

If you remember, the same thing happened at Pebble Beach ā€” before the final round was canceled altogether.

In between these two events, we had The Genesis Invitational. The biggest news out of that was an alleged case of mass food poisoning and a DQ that was allegedly caused by said alleged food.

Genesis players getting beach ready:

At any rate, itā€™s a string of poor publicity for the PGA. If the biggest news is delays and sickness ā€” canā€™t be good, right?

Now take LIV on the other hand.

Rahm moves. Niemann is flushing it. Rory hints at moving. Anthony Kim is back, even though he didnā€™t do great, but wasnā€™t as bad as many hoped (see next story).

Quick question: Is the PGA in the late Roman era of the game?

Hereā€™s what Paul Zinger had to say:

Paulā€™s zinger: ā€œā€¦the PGA Tour has fast become the qualifier for LIVā€¦ā€

This man has nothing to gain (unless heā€™s signing to join Feherty as a LIV commentator). Zinger likely is indifferent or negative toward LIV, but states something many are seeing ā€” The PGA is losing ground.

BUTā€¦there are signs of life.

LIV is clearly going after the ā€œeverymanā€ and younger crowds with music and shorts.

The PGA, while moving slower is also making moves for a younger, broader, even international crowd.

  • The TGL, clearly a team-based competitor to LIV.

  • The Good Good Desert Classic - bridging the legacy media/YouTube gap in pro golf.

  • The Q at Myrtle Beach is a PGA qualifier where many YT influencers are invited to compete, again bridging that gap to younger viewers.

Will Big Golf move fast enough, or last long enough to ward off the up-and-coming LIV?

As we often like to say here at Easy Parsā€¦Weā€™ll see.

Letā€™s talk about Anthony Kim

You know the story. After a 12-year hiatus, AK came back to pro golf as a wildcard on LIVā€™s roster.

He came in dead last with a +15.

That said, he seemed to get into a rhythm in the 3rd round. He made some birdies and ended up 3 over on the day.

Weā€™ve got all year, and heā€™s now set the stage to go up. If he ends up dusting off his game, heā€™s got a shot at moving up the leaderboard a bit.

Still going to be tough with so much talent vying for Ws, like Niemann, Koepka, Rahm, and DeChambeau. Even Phil had a phenomenal showing in Jeddah.

If you havenā€™t yet, check out this hilarious gif/meme/video mash-up from Happy Gilmore to AK, from X user @PGATUOR:

Disclaimer: Do not watch if you hack at your putts 4 or 5 times, on a regular basis.

Tour Pro Thomas Detry made a mistake. That mistake, like many on the golf course, begot more quick looks and poor decision-making.

He missed a 4-footer. Nothing crazy, greens are hard, right?

His next putt was 2 feet, which is where he made the worst mistake ā€” he did the ā€œno big dealā€ tap-in with zero prep and no pre-shot setup.

You know, where you put one foot back and another up and not taking the time to read it?

Most do it for anything under a foot.

Detry did it from 2 feetā€¦and missed.

Then missed again (and again) before making it on his 5th putt.

If youā€™re strong enough; hereā€™s the video:

Savage.

Thatā€™s what weā€™ve got today, golfer. The weather is getting nicer, and we hope you can get your first +6 round in soon, just like AK.

Weā€™d take it, TBH!

Later gator,

E.
