Tiger swoops in to save the PGA?

Jon Rahm: “I thought it was a joke” on the LIV/PGA tour deal

Jon Rahm, the world's No. 3 golfer and recent Masters champion, expressed doubts about his support for PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Golf Sin Etiquetas, a Spanish golf podcast, a few weeks before the Open.

He mirrored the overall player sentiment that Monahan must regain trust due to the undisclosed deal.

Then came the announcement that the investment in the PGA tour would be in the billions. And (allegedly) that a large chunk of those billions of dollars would go to player incentives.

Before the Open, this is what he had to say.

“The turn they took without us knowing was very unexpected, but I still think he’s been doing a great job.”

He also shared that right before the information went public, a PGA tour rep contacted him to tell him about the deal that was being formed between the PIF and PGA Tour.

“I thought it was a joke,” he remarked.

In hindsight, it was a big shock, but even though most players have their feelings hurt at the moment, they’ll most likely be singing praises to Monahan once the figure for the player's incentives is revealed.

Tiger to the rescue?

As mentioned earlier, a lot of players were understandably worried about how the whole PGA Tour/PIF deal would go down.

Something had to be done to make them feel better.

Enter Tiger Woods.

Tiger joined the PGA Tour Policy Board as a player director in an announcement that new measures would be taken to guarantee transparency and the player’s ability to accept or reject.

Even though Tiger has been out of action due to his persisting injuries, he’s still the most recognized golf figure of all time.

We’ll have to wait and see how his actual role ends up impacting the new golf mega league. Will it spell trouble for the deal? Maybe.

Do we think it’ll make for some interesting golf stories in the off season? Yes.

Phil is also happy to see Tiger in his new role

In case you’ve somehow missed it, Phil Mickelson has been critical of how the PGA Tour had been led under Jay Monahan.

He even claims that the idea for LIV and PIF investment came through him.

Nonetheless, Phil expressed that he’s happy to see Tiger taking a more active role in the PGA Tour.

Phil understands that Tiger is one of the few players that has true leverage and that, if he wants to, can keep the player’s interest in the forefront of the organization.

And since happy players play better golf, that’s always a good thing.

Time for the regular season finale

The Wyndham Championship once again marks the end of the PGA Tour’s regular season.

As usually is the case, most of the big names tend to sit this one out.

That said, Justin Thomas is set to make an appearance on this final stop of the regular season.

The time around the field in Greensboro, North Carolina will be reduced from 125 to 70 players which means it will be extra difficult to make the cut. In fact, a ton of PGA and Korn Ferry tour players had to battle it out in a qualifying tournament just to get one of the very few, coveted spots.

Which leads us to the tale of two fantastic golfers — Wesley and George Bryan.

Both of these brothers participated in the Wyndham Qualifier. Wesley is a PGA Pro. George is on his way there, and is attending Q School this year (a series of tournaments that could lead to a Korn Ferry or PGA tour card).

What happened?

George tore it up and went 5 under through 8 holes! The tour pro bro? He was +1 when he heard the news.

Let’s just say, a bit of sibling rivalry kicked in and BOTH ended 18 holes with a -5 on the card.

The result? A playoff between all the 5 unders (there were several), with only one coming out on top —and it was Wesley.

At least one Bryan Bro will be one of the very few in the Wyndham.

The Wyndham Championship starts today, so we’ll tune in for the last bit of Golf action of the season.
