šŸ”Ž The Valspar showed us something very interesting about the PGA

+Don't sleep on the LPGA

GM. This is Easy Pars. The golf newsletter that thinks many big names blew their chance to splash at the Valspar.

Here’s what we’ve got for you today:

  • Peter Malnati is a PGA pro.

  • So many opportunities, the pros who didn’t make the cut

  • Nelly Korda is on šŸ”„

Who is Peter Malnati

Nine years ago, Peter Malnati won a PGA tour event. Since then, it’s been a grind.

He’s 184th in the world rankings, but has managed to keep his tour card for the past decade.

Well, at the age of 36, Peter got his second win — The Valspar.

Last week, we wrote about the field being a little light. There were some very solid players (many who missed the cut, as you’ll see in the next story). We’d hoped for the cream to rise to the top.

No Scottie. No Rory. No Rahm. A real chance to stand out.

Peter Malnati answered the call. Him, right now (probably):

Here’s an honest take. Malnati not only won, but he did it with unique flare.

My man won a PGA tournament — wearing a bucket hat and using a neon yellow ball.

Congrats Peter šŸ†.

To be honest, after looking at his career earnings (shoutout Spotrac), Malnati’s had several top 10s and has earned over $10 million on tour!

Sure, $1.5 of it came from yesterday, but we’re hopeful this is the shot in the arm to bring another pro into the spotlight.

Plus, he wore a bucket hat. Can’t say for sure, but he’s had to have seen White Men Can’t Jump.

A bucket hat and yellow ball on the course is the equivalent of Woody Harrelson showing up like this:

Amazing and we’re here for it.

Big names missed the cut (aka the opportunity)

The Valspar gave opportunity to everyone in the field. Namely, if you’re going to win, this is your best chance.

Unfortunately, many of the names you’ve heard in Big Golf news, just not as frequently as the usual suspects, were in Valspar but didn’t even make the cut line!

Tony Finau. Keegan Bradley. Sam Burns. Jordan Spieth. And more.

Here’s a full write-up about names you’ve heard, but didn’t get to see play through Sunday.

That said, it’s not all bad. This shot of Finau, from the Valspar, gave us Homer Simpson vibes:

Nelly Korda LPGA = Scottie Scheffler PGA?

Imagine if you absolutely crushed a project at work. Then, poof, you’re gone for 7 weeks.

BUT, you come back to the office and, again, totally destroy.

In a nutshell, that’s what Korda just did.

A couple months ago, Nelly Korda won a tournament in her hometown. The win was dramatic, involving a playoff.

Yesterday, Korda did the exact same thing again. After 7 weeks off, she came back, almost lost, then sank a 12-foot birdie in a playoff to win the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship.

Side note: Can we get some better tournament names for these ladies? The Seri? Pak Attack at Feri Hills? A bit of marketing goes a long way.

Honestly, Korda is on fire, right now.

She also happens to have a back-to-back counterpart, in the PGA. Namely Scottie Scheffler.

Let’s see if the two can continue corollary championships throughout 2024.
